Workshop A
Diagnosing Tree Complexes: This Isn't CSI! A Part of the Plant Health Care Series
7.5 A, T, U, M, Bp CEUs
Full day, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (lunch included)
May 27 – June 26: $150 member / $200 nonmember

Maximum capacity: 70
Location: |
Morning - America’s Center, Room 102 |

Afternoon - Outdoor |
Presenters: Dr. John Ball, Professor of Forestry/Forest
Health Specialist, South Dakota State University, Brookings, South Dakota; and
Dr. Dan Marion, Professor/Tree Pathologist, State University of New York – Finger
Lakes, Canandaigua, New York.
The focus of plant health is to manage trees so that small problems
do not become big ones, yet, too often, arborists are not called to the site until
we have the worst scenario — big trees, big problems. This full day workshop, a part
of the continuing series of plant health care topics, covers the process and tools
arborists can use to properly diagnose problems and then the steps that can be employed
to improve the tree’s health. As the physician’s saying goes, “Prognosis without
diagnosis is malpractice!”
Workshop B
Measure Unique and Champion Trees Accurately
4.0 A, T, U, M, Bs CEUs
Half day, 8:00 am – Noon
May 27 – June 26: $100 member / $125 nonmember
After June 26: $125 member/$150 nonmember
Location: Missouri Historical Museum, AT&T Foundation Multipurpose Room
Presenters: Robert Van Pelt, Research Affiliate Professor, College
of Forest Resources, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington; and Dr. Stephen Sillett,
Professor and Kenneth L. Fisher Chair of Redwood Forest Ecology, Department of Forestry and
Wildland Resources, Humboldt State University, Arcata, California
Join West Coast big tree hunters Dr. Stephen Sillett and Dr. Robert Van Pelt
in a demonstration of hyper-accurate tree measurements. They will discuss the theory and
practice of accurately measuring tree height, diameter, and volume. The geometry and
differences in using the “sine method” to obtain accurate tree height measurements compared
to the tangent method will be clearly outlined and the potential errors associated with
each. The latest laser-based methods, including the ground-based tools that came within
1 cm of accurately measuring the height of the world’s tallest tree in 2006, will be
presented. In addition, a simple, accurate, and relatively inexpensive method to estimate
volumes of trees will be demonstrated. Accurate measurements of trees are an important part
of the information collected by arborists, landscape professionals, and ecologists, as well
as big tree aficionados. Sign up to learn how to keep tree measurement errors out of your life!
Workshop C
Detective Dendro and the Seven Scenarios: Solving Trees’ Mysteries
4.0 A, T, U, M, Bs CEUs
Half day, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
May 27 – June 26: $100 member / $125 nonmembe
After June 26: $125 member/$150 nonmember
Location: Missouri Historical Museum, AT&T Foundation Multipurpose Room
Presenters: Guy Meilleur, Consulting Aborist, Better Tree Care
Associates, New Hill, North Carolina
Readers of Arborist News have been intrigued by Detective Dendro’s
cases, such as the Gratified Grandiflora, Sinister Stripper, and Lascivious Lianas.
Now help Dendro solve his toughest case yet: seven separate tree mysteries in each
of seven real-life scenarios. The primary assignment is managing risk, but our
investigations will cover the whole arboreal domain, from appraisal to infrastructure,
from soil to scaffold structure, from pruning to pests. Your arboricultural aptitude
will be amplified, and your synapses will snap as we seek the answers to trees’
persistent questions. Our deductions will be fueled by arboreous snacks furnished by
local fruit and nut growers. Pack up your inspection gear and fight for truth, justice,
and the arboricultural way!
