Arborist

Salary: $31.53 - $39.41/hour

Requires an Arborist
Contract 24 Months (40 hours per week)
The Town of Newmarket is committed to taking every precaution reasonable in the

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Forestry, the Arborist is responsible for the general
receipt, review and processing of tree permit and development applications related to the Town
of Newmarket tree related Bylaws and Policies within the Public Works Services Department,
including providing forestry specific technical support and liaison with internal and external
stakeholders during development processes, such as guaranteed maintenance and assumption
reviews leveraging the use of all media types (web, telephone, in person). Promotes a
sustainable urban forest as part of managing municipal assets, including support for the
administration of forestry contracts and services as related to the urban forest.
How do I qualify?
Arboriculture Technician Diploma or equivalent with progressive related urban forestry
experience, preferably with a Lead Hand or supervisory capacity. Municipal experience is an
asset.
Certified Arborist certification through International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and current
chainsaw certification.
Safety & Awareness for Line Clearing Certificate from the Electrical & Safety Utilities
Association of Ontario (E&USA), ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ), Ministry of
Environment Pesticide licenses are assets.
Computer proficiency in GIS Tree Inventory is an asset.
Thorough knowledge and experience in the planning, development, operation, and
maintenance of urban forestry services including tree climbing and tree inspections in
relations to risk assessment, structural integrity, insect/disease identification, pruning
techniques and management.
Demonstrate strong tree identification skills and ability to identify defects and makes
recommendation for follow-up maintenance requirements.
Ability to competently operate various equipment related to arboriculture, trucks, brush
chippers, stump grinders, saws, ropes and rigging and demonstrated knowledge of health
and safety regulations and maintenance procedures.
Physically capable to perform the various tasks associated with maintenance of the
municipal tree canopy. Sound interpersonal, project/time management, analytical,
organizational, communication (both verbal and written), presentation, public/media
relations, problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
Ability to interact effectively and courteously with all levels of staff and contacts in a
Customer Service focused environment; build cooperative, collaborative working
relationships with internal and external customers.
Demonstrated knowledge in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and
database software, as well as ability to obtain information from geographical information
systems, and the Internet.
First Aid, CPR, Electrical Utilities Safety Association Electrical Awareness Certificate and
Tree Rescue certification.
Class “D” driver’s license with “Z” air brake endorsement in good standing.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and to exercise judgement.
Availability to attend evening meetings or other events, if necessary.
Salary: $31.53 - $39.41/hour
