As-Needed Arborist/Biologist

Salary:

Rincon Consultants, Inc. is seeking a certified International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) arborist, as an As-Needed Arborist/Biologist in the Santa Barbara area who will serve as an expert regarding tree removals and tree pruning, and experience with local biological resources including wildlife and plants. We’re seeking an Arborist/Biologist who has experience with local and regional ordinances and regulations that protect biological resources. This professional will be the liaison between Rincon, our clients, contractors, and relevant agencies to ensure projects are compliant with conditions of approval. This position requires the ability to perform extensive fieldwork on potentially difficult terrain and during adverse weather conditions, often independently, and may require occasional extended travel.

The as-needed arborist/biologist will have experience conducting tree inventories to identify location, species, physical characteristics, health, and recommendations to mitigate risk. They will identify potential impacts to trees from construction activities and hazards such as utility lines; and prepare, interpret, and implement tree preservation plans for compliance with specific project requirements.

 

Overview of Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assess trees and collect data for large tree inventories and risk assessments
• Identify trees by species (both native to CA and ornamental trees)
• Identify and communicate tree trimming techniques to protected trees, including maintenance measures such as cabling and bracing to alleviate potential risks.
• Identify protected wildlife and plants in the field (e.g. western pond turtle, monarch butterflies, wood rats, purple needlegrass, etc.)
• Collaborate with construction crews to avoid impacting protected trees and other biological resources during construction
• Prepare documentation and reports detailing project compliance with protective requirements

 

This Job Might Be For You If You Have The Following:

• Minimum B.S. in Environmental Science, Forestry, Urban Forestry, Horticulture, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, or another related field (candidates with the equivalent in knowledge and experience may also be considered)
• International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certification required
• Successfully conducted monitoring for tree impacts for at least 2 years
• General knowledge and experience conducting:
  • Tree Inventory
  • Tree Risk Assessments
  • Protected Tree Monitoring
  • Tree Removal/Construction Monitoring
  • Field survey techniques (wildlife and plants)
  • Survey Results Reporting
  • Data Collection in a GPS device
• Interpreting project site plans
• Familiarity working with large utility clients or in corridors on linear projects
• Detail oriented; resourceful; strong time management skills; ability to work independently in the field
• Ability to identify local trees and knowledge of growth rates
• Experience working with data collection devices (i.e. tablets and electronic forms) and GIS software desired
• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Strong customer relation skills
• Ability to work in varied terrain and inclement weather with flexible schedules (available nights and weekends as needed)
• Required to be at least 21 years of age
• Must have a valid Driver License and satisfactory driving record

The base salary range for this temporary position is $30.00-$40.00 per hour. At Rincon, our salary ranges are based on market median of similar jobs, according to third party salary benchmark surveys. The base pay that is actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
