Overview:
Under the general supervision of the Parks Commissioner, Director of Urban Forestry, City Tree Warden or their designee, the Arborist will support the care, protection and promotion of the urban forest throughout the community, including the City-owned trees, as well as other trees to the extent provided for by law and/or regulation.
Responsibilities:
- Helps manage the maintenance and care of municipal trees in public ways and City owned Parks, cemeteries, and other public open spaces.
- Monitors activities related to planting, watering, pruning, pest control, removals, warranties, and storm response.
- Utilizes a work order management system related to arboriculture operations to ensure efficient use of labor, materials and equipment
- Supports the Tree Warden in developing the scope of work and technical specifications for contracted work, monitor contractor award process and ensure contract compliance.
- Updates asset management as trees get pruned, planted and removed.
- Receives and responds to public concerns related to division operations; research and resolve conflicts, engage regular with community groups and activists on tree related issues.
- Complies with and ensure compliance with Departmental policies and procedures, recommend new policies and procedures or revisions to the same.
- Assists with coordination during emergency storm events.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
- Three to Five (3-5) years of progressively responsible experience in arboriculture, either at the municipal or commercial level.
- Certification as an Arborist by either the Massachusetts Arborist Association or by the International Society of Arboriculture.
- Massachusetts Driver’s License Required.
- Proficiency and knowledge of tree planting including stock selection, site preparation, tree installation, and required aftercare.
- Working knowledge of practices and equipment associated with the maintenance and care of trees and shrubs, particularly those common in the Northeastern United States.
- Knowledge of ANSI A-300, Z-133 and Z60.1 standards of practice & operation
- Proficiency in written and verbal communication
- Four year degree in forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, or a related field preferred.
- Proficiency in public speaking and community relations preferred.
- Knowledge and familiarity with municipal government operations preferred.
- Ability to work independently on routine tasks and manage recurring project cycles.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse group of coworkers and members of the community
- Ability to exercise sound and professional judgment.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions typical to the region including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
- Ability to work indoors in an office environment.
- Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.
- CORI check required.
