Arborist II

Summary Objective
The purpose of this position is to plan, design and monitor street tree and urban forestry projects and
programs to ensure the preservation, conservation, restoration, and enhancement of the physical
environment.
This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through
periodic meetings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.

Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

• Prepares pre-bid materials defining scope of work and related information necessary for request for proposals (RFP), responds to questions concerning the project and/or contract(s); reviews bids, and prepares recommendation(s).

• Prepares and monitors the budget for projects, recommends project budget needs for annual appropriations, and ensures project deliverables stay on-time, on-target, and on-budget.

• Reports on progress toward project objectives and goals, and quantitative and qualitative outcomes of projects.

• Utilizes ArcGIS to collect essential metrics for reports.

• Communicates with public, contractors and partnering organizations.

• Enforces safety procedures to ensure safe operation of equipment and employee safety.

• Inspects completed work, and consults with staff or contractor to discuss problems, procedures, and work assignments.

• Performs tree maintenance in tree nursery, parks, woodland areas, and in the public right-ofway.

• Evaluates and analyzes operations for compliance to standards and regulations and recommends modifications and improvements to achieve objectives and goals.

• Monitors contracted work to ensure contractors are meeting work standards, safety expectations, and project deadlines.

• Operates vehicles and heavy machinery.

• Prepares reports, correspondence, and documents, and completes special projects.

• Performs tree inspections and issues permits or work orders for tree maintenance of public trees.

• Provides technical assistance and education concerning urban forestry.

• Performs related work as assigned.

 

 

Minimum Requirements

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Horticulture, Urban Forestry or related field.
• Three (3) years of arboriculture, forestry, urban forestry experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

• Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing, and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT): Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to:

• Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.

• Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.

• Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.

• Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.

• Traffic; Moving machinery.

• Electrical shock; Heights.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

• Must wear safety equipment as mandated by OSHA.

• Must be on 24-hour call.

• Must be a Certified Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture.

• Must obtain Tree Risk Assessment Qualification within two years of employment.

• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history

THIS IS A GRANT FUNDED POSITION

Louisville Equitable Forest Initiative (LEFI) is a grant funded, multi-faceted approach to growing equitable urban canopy and encouraging holistic sustainability for underserved communities in Louisville. This includes a comprehensive inventory of Louisville’s public trees, new planting initiatives in underserved neighborhoods, community outreach initiatives encouraging environmental stewardship, and a workforce development program to train residents from underserved communities in green industry skills.
