Forestry Supervisor I

Description

Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to supervise tree removal and maintenance work crews in parks, parkways, and public thoroughfares.
This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Prepares reports on programs and completes special projects.
  • Enforces safety procedures to insure safe operation of equipment and employee safety.
  • Inspects work sites to determine work methods and procedures, machinery, equipment, tools and materials.
  • Provides technical assistance and instruction concerning the operation and use of equipment and chemicals, and removal of damaged limbs and branches.
  • Supervises work crews involved in grass cutting, pruning, spraying, treating, felling, planting, transplanting and removal of trees and shrubs.
  • Supervises the cleanup of tree and shrubbery debris from parks and parkways, trails and lake areas and provides technical assistance and instruction.
  • Designs forestry trail layouts, supervises the construction of rustic structures and installation of trail signs, and stocks lakes with fish and wildlife.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment to remove debris from park areas, and transports employees and equipment to and from work sites.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
 

 

Minimum Requirements

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Horticulture, Urban Forestry, or related field.
  • One (1) year of urban forestry, forestry, or arboriculture experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
    • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
    • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
    • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
    • Traffic; Moving machinery.
    • Electrical shock; Heights.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
  • Must be a Certified Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) within two years of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain within six months of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Must wear safety equipment as mandated by OSHA.
  • Must be on 24-hour call.

Louisville Equitable Forest Initiative (LEFI) is a grant funded, multi-faceted approach to growing equitable urban canopy and encouraging holistic sustainability for underserved communities in Louisville. This includes a comprehensive inventory of Louisville’s public trees, new planting initiatives in underserved neighborhoods, community outreach initiatives encouraging environmental stewardship, and a workforce development program to train residents from underserved communities in green industry skills.
