Landscape Maintenance Worker I/II

We have an outstanding career opportunity to join a high-quality municipal Public Works Department with the City of Thousand Oaks.
The City is currently accepting applications to fill two positions in the Landscape Division at the City’s Municipal Service Center in the Newbury Park area of Thousand Oaks.
Primary responsibilities:
- Perform skilled work in the pruning, care, and maintenance of trees and grounds maintenance, including chemical application duties
- Perform heavy manual labor in the care and maintenance of trees and in performing grounds maintenance
- Install, repair, and program irrigation systems and controllers
- Perform graffiti removal
- Perform routine and emergency work from an aerial lift bucket
- Assist in overseeing the work of contractors
- Assist with the cleanup of encampment and abandon property cleanup efforts
- Support police personnel in non-enforcement and enforcement situations involving unhoused individuals, including posting, documentation, and storing private property
Note: Work Schedule – 4/40 (Monday – Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). Position involves performing after-hours emergency work on an “as needed” basis and on-call duties on a rotating basis.
The ideal candidate should possess:
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade
- Some experience in gardening or landscape maintenance
- The ability to operate and maintain landscape maintenance equipment
- Knowledge of proper landscape, irrigation, and tree maintenance
- The ability to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds
- The ability to work in tight and confined spaces, including precarious places, on elevated platforms and aerial devices, and in inclement weather conditions
- Pride in their personal work product; demonstrate initiative
- Commitment to safe work practices and procedures
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Basic computer skills
Requirements:
Level I: Ability to obtain a valid Class B California driver’s license with tanker endorsement within six months of employment.
Level II: Two years of experience at a level comparable to the Landscape Maintenance Worker I with the City. A valid Class B California driver’s license with tanker endorsement.
Perform after-hours emergency work on an “as needed” basis and on-call duties on a rotating basis. Must be able to respond to on-call responsibilities at the Municipal Service Center within 30 minutes.
Work Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Special Requirement:
- Classification is part of the US Department of Transportation (DOT) program and is regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA). Pre-employment and random drug testing are requirements of the program.
- Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) to obtain a valid Class B California driver's license
- In accordance with Cal/OSHA regulations, in order to get an airtight face seal while working with a respirator, employees in this position are required to be clean-shaven (no beards, long mustaches, long sideburns, or lengthy head hair).
