MEDINA CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION announces an open-competitive examination to be held at Medina City Hall, 132 M. Elmwood Ave, Lower Level on Tuesday, December 17th at 6:00pm to create an eligible list for the classification of:
TREE CARE TECHNICIAN
SALARY: This is a full-time, union position with benefits and an hourly rate of $23.78-$30.36. NATURE OF WORK: The work in this class is manual labor of more than ordinary difficulty that often involves the use of acquired skill and calls for the use of some skills acquired by experience or on-the-job training. Under the general direction of the Arborist, the employee in this classification performs substantial arboricultural work consisting of tree maintenance, corrective pruning, mulching, chipping, fertilization and treatment, sucker removal, watering of trees, planting of trees and snow removal. Working aloft will be required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent; willingness to learn how to climb trees safely and efficiently with a minimum of 1 year of tree care experience, 2 years preferred. Possession of a valid driver’s license (CDL preferred) issued by the State of Ohio. Possess CPR and First Aid certification. Knowledge of occupational hazards and required safety precautions involved with the operation of forestry equipment according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
NATURE OF EXAMINATION: The written test is weighted at 100% and will test for safe work practices, care of trees, corrective pruning, fertilization and treatment, identifying tree species, tools/machinery/equipment operation, first aid/CPR, preparing reports and records. A passing grade is 70% or above.
EXTRA POINTS: The Commission will award extra credit points not to exceed five (5) points for possession of preferred certification or licenses.
- Commercial Driver’s License: 5 points with copy of current license submission
- International Society of Arboriculture Certification: 5 points with copy of certification
- Line Clearance Arborist Certification or Line Clearance Arborist Trainee: 2 points with submission of proof
- More than 2 years of Experience: 2 points
Proof of extra credit needs to be submitted by day of written test. Extra credit will be added to an applicant’s written score of 70% or better.
VETERANS PREFERENCE: Any person who has completed service in the uniformed services and who has been honorably discharged from the uniformed services or transferred to the reserve with evidence of satisfactory service, may file a certificate of service or honorable discharge to receive an additional five points of credit, to be added to the earned passing grade resulting from the examination.
PROBATION: All persons appointed to permanent positions are subject to a probationary period of 120 days worked. The probationary period is an essential part of the examination process used for the effective adjustment of the employee and the elimination of any probationer whose performance fails to meet the required standards of work.

Employment is contingent on the passage of a drug/ alcohol test and a background check through the Ohio BCI fingerprint records.
