Arborist
Location: North Vancouver, British Columbia
Salary: $44.05 per hour

The Engineering, Parks and Environment department is looking for a regular full time Arborist to join our dynamic team. As part of our Park Operations team, you will contribute to the sustainable management of our City green spaces while ensuring public safety and ecological health.
We are seeking a skilled and qualified Arborist to join our Urban Forestry team. This position requires expertise and experience in working at extreme heights using climbing equipment, such as rope and harness systems and to perform complex tree maintenance and aerial tasks.
In this role, you will provide supervision and leadership by overseeing a team of skilled and semi-skilled workers engaged in urban forest, street, and park tree management. You will be responsible for training and mentoring your team, ensuring that high standards of safety and efficiency are always maintained. Your expertise in tree climbing and maintenance will be crucial as you perform complex aerial tasks for tree maintenance, including pruning, planting, and removal operations. While using specific techniques and equipment, you will ensure safe and effective work at considerable heights.
Your duties will also involve inspecting trees to identify diseases, structural issues, or other problems, determining necessary treatments, and preparing estimates for required work. You will provide valuable insights into tree species selection for new planting projects. Additionally, you will engage with the public by responding to service requests and complaints regarding city trees, offering courteous and informative assistance to both internal and external contacts, including developers and contractors.
You will evaluate damaged trees, prepare reports and provide evidence for damage claims, which may include court appearances. You will inspect construction sites to assess potential impacts on boulevard trees and you will recommend and assist in implementing actions to mitigate negative effects. Safety is paramount, and you will ensure both personal and team safety through adherence to traffic and pedestrian control safety methods, as well as respond to emergency call-outs related to tree hazards. Administrative duties include maintenance of records and files related to tree management activities, writing correspondence, and assisting with updates to the tree information system.
Candidates should possess considerable knowledge of arboriculture methods, tree species, diseases, pests, and their management, along with considerable knowledge with hazard tree identification and treatment methods. Proficiency in planning, supervising, and executing urban forestry tasks is crucial, as well as preparing and maintaining detailed records using software applications. Skilled in the use and maintenance of arboriculture tools and equipment, candidates should also demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, independence in decision-making, and the ability to work effectively in varying weather conditions. Excellent communication skills and the ability to maintain positive relationships with staff and the public are also required.
The ideal candidate will have qualifications that include graduation from a diploma program from a recognized Institute of Technology in Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, or Forest Management. In addition, it is a minimum requirement to have a Climbing Arborist Certificate of Qualification through the Industry Training Authority, the Pesticide Applicator’s certificate and a certification as a Faller with the B.C. Forest Safety Council or equivalent certification. A valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License is required.
Shortlisted candidates may be required to complete a field assessment to demonstrate their applicable skills and knowledge.
Salary:
$44.05 per hour (Provisional)
(Pay Grade 55 – January 2024 rates)
Hours of Work:
7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday
