Arborist
Location: Galesburg, IL
Salary: $29.70-$38.03 per hour
The City of Galesburg seeks interested candidates for the Arborist position. This is a non-represented hourly, full-time position compensated between $29.70 and $38.03 per hour, depending on qualifications.

Essential Functions
- Responsible for the daily operations of the maintenance personnel and related functions within the Forestry Division.
- Assigns and supervises work activities of personnel, reviews project progress and completion. Oversees heavy equipment operations, prepares time/payroll sheets, maintains all pertinent records, inventory and ordering.
- Operates a variety of equipment, including but not limited to: lift trucks, pick-up trucks, dump trucks, backhoes and end loaders.
- Operates and maintains small tools and equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, stump grinders, woodchippers, jack hammers, string line trimmers and concrete saws.
- Plows snow on City streets and parking lots during winter months as needed.
- Prepares City grounds for special annual events.
- Responsible for the training of personnel on equipment use including bucket lift truck.
- Prepares progress reports.
- Administers Galesburg Tree Ordinance and standards.
- Serves as an ex-officio member of the Tree Commission.
- Planting, pruning, fertilizing, diagnosing and treats trees, turf and vegetation located on City property.
- Acts as liaison between division employees and City Administration.
- Remains on 24-hour call in the event of emergencies.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or its equivalent required. Associate Degree in arboriculture preferred.
- International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist certification required (or must be obtained within one year of employment).
- Illinois Pesticide Applicator Certification (Ornamentals) required (or must be obtained within one year of employment)
- Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement required (or must be obtained within six months of employment).
- Illinois Flagger Certification preferred.
Work Experience Required
- Minimum of two years’ experience in landscaping and/or forestry operations, with a working knowledge of applicable tools, principles, methods and techniques.
- Experience in supervising work crews.
- Knowledge, understanding and compliance with all city, state and federal safety regulations.
- Experience working around traffic and in roadways.
- Experience in mechanized snow removal operations.
Personal Qualifications and Ability
- To plan and supervise the work of unskilled, semi-skilled, and/or skilled workers performing various activities.
- To read and understand grade and elevations.
- Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor in an outside environment.
- To identify problem areas and recommend corrective measures.
- To establish and maintain working relationships with employees and the general public.

- Ability to perform heavy to very heavy manual work and heavy lifting; lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Required to talk and hear; is frequently required to walk, stand, or sit; and is occasionally required to kneel, crouch, or lift up to 100 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Work outside in various temperature and climate conditions for both short and extended periods of time.
