Effective Report Writing Workshop
Writing is a critical part of communication. If the reader cannot understand what you are telling them, how do you expect them to proceed? In this class, we will review how to write effectively. We will practice writing styles needed to develop or respond to request for proposals, site memos, field reports, letters, and formal reports. The report themes will focus on risk assessment, construction sites, and site memos in general. This is an interactive course, and participants are required to bring their own laptop computer with the ability to use Microsoft Word software. Participants will receive the class handouts, class exercises, and report templates on a thumb drive during class and will load the documents onto their computer at the start of the class.

Throughout the day, the class will use their laptops to preform specific writing exercises, including editing and writing sample reports. We will examine and critique submitted and sample reports as a group, and discuss how they might be improved.

Lunch will be provided.
Date: Saturday, 10 August 2019 Pre-Registration $225
Time: 9:00 am - 3:15 pm Onsite Registration $250

Documenting Evidence Workshop
Arborists routinely examine trees for health and risk. An assignment may involve site review or checking a tree before pruning or removing it —perhaps it will also involve collecting data to report appraisal of damage, trespass issues or forensic investigations about injuries caused by falling trees.

This course covers the professional practice of recognizing and understanding evidence, and learning how to effectively use it in reports. It applies to tree care companies, climbers, municipal, utility, and consulting arborists — anyone working with trees who may later need to explain what was done. In every case, from the routine to the unusual, the arborist needs to clearly understand the practical and intellectual process of documenting what was seen on site.

Regardless of the assignment, the process needs to be systematic, thorough and clearly documented. Later on, if the report or other records are examined and questioned (often many years later), the arborist will be able to review and clearly articulate what was done and why. Topics covered include how to systematically collect, analyze and interpret evidence, keep records and take photographs, in addition to assembling all info into a well-ordered report.

Before the course, participants are encouraged to submit case studies for class discussion. A group exercise includes examining the selected case studies’ strengths and weaknesses, and suggesting ways in which we can improve our professional practices.

A copy of Julian Dunster’s book, Documenting Evidence: Practical Guidance for Arborists, will be included as a part of the registration cost.

Lunch will be provided.
