ISA offers a variety of educational materials to help arborists improve their arboricultural knowledge. Each week we will feature a product, or group of products that will enhance your arboriculture education. This week, ISA is featuring the Best Management Practices (BMP) Managing Trees During Construction by Kelby Fite and E. Thomas Smiley.
According to Smiley, this publication outlines all of the things arborists need to know and do to protect trees so that they can thrive after the construction is finished.
“[This BMP] is especially directed towards consultants and municipal arborists, but it’s useful for any arborist interested in construction,” he said. “We’d also like to see homeowners buy this book, because if homeowners are pushing to use the best practices, then there construction people will do a better job at preserving their trees.”
Many of the topics covered in this book include determining tree protection zones to protect the root system of trees, installing barriers and maintaining trees throughout the construction process.
“Trees provide a lot of benefits,” Smiley said. “This [book] is for the sophisticated builders and buyers who see the value of trees for their properties, and for the environment as a whole. In this day of climate change we need to preserve every tree we can.”
